Womad was great. got there on Friday night after a very long and sticky drive down in the mighty humbrum. found a superb spot to camp and set up. Set the awning out, met up with Dave and got base camp one established. Mark, Vicky Rick and Sammy came by to say hello. We all sat in the evening sun for a bit and then put the kids to bed. That went very well - perfect design. Saturday wobbled round in the heat, saw some music, absorbed the culture. That's the thing about Womad for me - it's not really the music, it's the culture. You can feel it - it feels like you could be anywhere in the world - a dusty track in India, with people selling all kinds of weird stuff by the side of the road, all kinds of costume a clothes. great stuff. Saturday night went for an epic festy wander with everyone. Bumped into Mike and Haley and Matt Collins. Went to sit by Matt's fire for a bit, then went for more walking. Went to collect my bongo's and found a drum circle. top banana. By this point, I wasn't in much of a drumming mood, after a near collapse experience (probably dehydration - don't worry mum!). Sunday - I hung out by the camp all day, but everyone else went to the arena to sit under the flags one last time and absorb some quality world musics. I caught up on some well needed sleep before driving us all home. Should be sticking some interesting photo's up soon...

Went to the 'Harrogate Fiesta' last weekend in the valley gardens. Like the car that it shares it's name with, the event was 'small, quiet, conservative and safe'. The music was fair enough - "world music" well performed. The event was only let down by Harrogate Borough Councils 'safe' attitude. The PA volume was safe, the music was safe (must not offend anyone.. don't make any waves) and the safest bit of all - it's finishing time - 18:00 !
I'm not suggesting that I'd agree with it going on until the wee hours (well... actually I would agree with that, but for the sake of this argument....) but it could have gone on until at least 21:00. It seemed such a shame, to deny all the people that attended, a bit of a shin dig. Can't Harrogate Borough Council see what people want ? I know it's in a residential area, but an 18:00 finish is pathetic. Seemed a shame to set up that rig, for what was in effect 2 bands for a small set each. There is so much local talent around - couldn't they have carried on the night with some local bands / DJ's ? Ahh well - Harrogate will never be a Brighton when it comes to public services !
After that we went to Knaresborough for a party celebrating a friends brothers birthday / moving in party. very nice. Had to turn down the vodka jelly because I was driving. !
This week, we are winding up to a big mission at the weekend - we are going to WOMAD festival (also see BBC's WOMAD website). Should be nice.

"How beautiful does this look?" was one of the hand scribed cards that Fat Boy held up to the camera for the big screen at the Brighton Beach "Big Beach Boutique II" gig on 13.07.02. I could not have agreed more. After an epic journey, from Harrogate starting at 04:30, 6 of us arrived in Brighton around 11:00 am, to be blessed with a free parking spot for our campervan, 10 minutes walk from the stage. We hung out on the beach, in a top spot, (near the main stage camera) all afternoon, guarding our turf. We noticed things getting really busy around 16:00, and by 17:00 you could not move. We were lucky in the respect that we took plenty of water with us, but if we had not, there would have been no easy way for us to get to a source of drinking water (my main criticism of the organisation along with getting to the massively over subscribed toilets, and the very badly organised public transport infrastructure). A few thousand bottles of water passed around the crowd every now and then would have been good. Once the tunes started, and everyone stood up, us and our neighbours seemed to have more space, along with a superb view of the show. By the time the sun set behind the stage, we all knew that this was something really special. A legend of a gig. I could not get my head round how busy it was, as I looked behind me I could see a packed crowed right down to the entire beach. A flotilla of boats had anchored just out from the shore, all the balconies of the Grand Hotel, and the roof of the Brighton centre were packed with people, the promenade, the road, the walls - everywhere possible were people. To think it was busier than Glastonbury, on an area that would have struggled to support 60,000 it's incredible it didn't turn into a massive disaster. Reading the papers after the gig, I was naturally saddened to hear of the death, and the injuries etc. [UPDATE 18:55 I have just read on the official site that the heart attack was unconected to the gig and that there were only 15 submission to the hospital - less than that of a normal Saturday night in Brighton - who's negative spin was that then?!? - and an estimate of 240,000 turned up] On reflection, It could have been a lot worse - the crowd management was very well co-ordinated all things considered. I'm hoping that 'the decision makers' will see the good side of it, and they will allow it again. Perhaps someone should have thought (or subsequently learn from the mistake) "Hang on.. advertised nationally on TV, a free party hosted by one of the worlds biggest DJ's, in one of the UK's most loved summer towns... I think there may be more than 60,000 who turn up we're going to need much more resources"
From my own perspective, I'm going to stick with my happy memories of what happened. A truly fantastic, 'once in a lifetime' brilliant experience.

"Jaygo's first Birthday"

The latest collection has just been posted. only a couple of days since the last blog, so not much new. Jaygo is now 1 !! . Went out for a blast in my mates 911 V12 Targa last night (well - it's actually his bosses, but he's lent it to him for a couple of months) That was very fast indeed. At work, a hectic, but manageably hectic workload, also planning to go to the Fat Boy Slim gig on Brighton beach at the weekend - fingers crossed.

There is a pattern emerging. I'd like to start out by saying "Messy Friday night" but that's how I started the last blog. Got classically drunk. Comedy drunk. Quite a big gang of us - Eirene, Maria, Denise Tina and myself. I thought it was going to be a scary 'girls night out with a token bloke (me)' but it soon levelled off when Maria brought round her bloke - nice Scottish bloke - Leon. Just before we went out Mark stumbled round (Brian) with a few tins. On our way out, we bumped into Simon Wigg so it was even Stevens and stevettas. Incidents include, special brew, getting lost on the stray, getting told off in ASDA for trying to use one of there kiddie trolleys (ASDA is now 24 hours!)

Saturday, we went out in Humbrum, collected Mark and Vicki, and went to Masham. Sat in the field next to the river by the bridge all day in the van. very nice. Set up the awning (or motoring chalet as it says on the label!) which is great - makes the van even bigger. got a load of quality scran from a deli in Masham (well worth a visit) and hung out there all evening. would have liked to have stayed over but it said NO CAMPING where we were.

Sunday - not to dissimilar - went to a camping exhibition (we're well into it all now as you can probably tell!) and hung out there all day - we were joined by Anna and Damian. We bought a camping sofa. It's great. It's this thing that lives in a little bag, when you open it, it turned into a 2 people sofa. tres bon.

since then, stressed out couple of days at work. Went to derby yesterday, Wakefield today. So - back to the last few bits and bobs that I have to do today then a bit of telly at home I think.

before I go, I've just done this stupid online quiz (as plugged by Simon W.) Here is the result I got;

You can take the quiz yourself (or "The Most Useless Test Ever") here.

Interesting weekend. Very messy Friday. Ended up going a bit squff in some hotel residents bar at about 2 in the morning. Can't remember much about the trip home. Quite fun non the less.
We are well into our new van. It's like having a second home that you can move about. Went to IKEA on Saturday (strewth, it was busy!) to stock up on bits and bobs for the van. the list was sort of;

*A kettle
*Some cups
*Some cutlery
*A blanket
*A big pillow thing in giraffe print
*Some cleaning stuff
*Random other objects

Felix was at my mums, so after IKEA we went out for a picnic in the van. Sunday, we got up and had breakfast down at Knaresborough riverside. Very nice. (I hope the novelty never wears off!) Followed by a trip up to Darlington to see relatives. Paul was in Italy ! lucky him. Dropped the van of at Chick's garage (newly aquainted VW specialist mechanic - top bloke!) to get sorted for it's M.O.T.. Today has been hectic at work. Still got quite a bit to do, but having a pseudo break / busmans holiday and writing a blog. At the end of the day, work = tapping away on keyboards a lot of the time and leisure = tapping away on keyboards a lot of the time. Hopefully I'll be able to offset the desk tied balance with a bit of van adventure from now on.
