Just finished reading “The War of Don Emanuel’s Nether Parts” by Louis de Bernières. It’s a superb read. It’s the third book I’ve read of his and I loved every moment of it. Amongst the things I love about his master of the art writing style is the way he describes place. The first book I read of his was the epic Birds Without Wings which I was on with for most of last summer, was all set in Turkey. The second book I read of his was “Red Dog“, depicted Western Australian place and character in a brilliant fashion. The War of Don Emanuel’s Nether Parts is set in South America and unfolds a wonderful story. So many characters are introduced, class systems and cultures explored, and fascinating insights into that part of the world are unveiled. A proper page turner from start to finish.
