At first light today we set off on a bearing of South West. 2 stops and about 5 hours later we arrived at a beautiful little 17th Century cottage near the village of Oake in Somerset. Exposed beams, inglenook fire, cob wall construction… a gem of a place hidden away in the epitemy of backwater.
Met the owners, really welcoming family. The son was having a jam with his friend in a nearby barn (him on elec bass, his mate on drums – both super sharp), low and behold, a set of congas. What a welcome! After a wee jam I unpacked and we had a powerNap™ before awakening and heading to the local pub, which you can see from our bedroom window.
The Anchor Inn – top pub – just what we were after. A genuine warm welcoming atmosphere, good food and good ale. I had a go on some local juice called ‘gem’. Dark, heady supping ale. Eirene went for a Dorset Gold. Strong and fruity. I had a massive portion of beef madras cooked to what tasted like very authentic standards – nice and dry, not stupid hot. Eirene had a great looking fish stew, the boys had chicken goujons and lasagna. Met some nice locals and their dogs including an ace old Brindle Boxer called Boot. Wandered back to the cottage as we’d not brought out any torches. (bloody townies.)
Now back at the cottage, the kids are asleep and we’ve cracked open a bottle of Crozes Hermitage red that I got for my birthday. It’s a berry berry nice.

Radio goo goo. Downside of the day was my car sterio decided to lock itself and demand a pin code. I’d gathered a large collection of podcasts (or netcasts as they are called in some circles these days) for the journey. Tried phoning the Renault dealership at the pre cup of coffee time of the morning who were by the book and withholding the code. Was also looking forward to a bit of the old cricket updates. Enquired at the pub tonight, the word on the street was “it wasn’t looking good” but checking the scores just now we beat the West Indies by 3 wickets. Result. Flinters had a go at bowling. Should have had a go verses the Aussies last weekend. Off to read some stuff on the local area for a while now.
