Superb! I've just won one of this [ LOMO smena ] off ebay for an absolute snip of a bargain:

"In the early 70's, at a time when Western countries filled their cameras with decadent electronic gizmos, the glorious Soviet Union decided to offer its heroic workers a tool to put their natural creativity at the service of the Party and to take pictures of their holidays at Novosibirsk. The Lomo Smena 8M was born." (www.lumieresenboite.com) Another lomo camera that looks like it can get some fantastic results. I can't wait to get it!

Watched Fargo last night. Good Film. The Coen brothers who wrote and directed the film are natural born film makers and who's methodology is totally different to anyone else. They seem to have their own very laid back way of doing things, and think as a single unit. In the making of / extra features William H. Macy (lead male) said "it's like someone gave a couple of stoners a million dollars and said - go make a movie". Some good cinematography in there as well - very atmospheric bleak landscapes, very believable! (I even believed the bit about it being based on a true story!)

What a night for a Monday that turned out to be! Geeked out till about 9 with Al, working on some visuals for FIRE, then went to 'gate for a quiet one the to the packed Blues Bar to see PTSFP. They rocked. Really tight slick stuff they have - a lot of 'faster louder harder' type 5 pieces end up sounding like a big pile of mush but these guys have a crisp clean sound, some clever stuff with harmonies and timings - skills. PTSFP dedicated their last tune to Craig Drummond - a chap who had a nasty tumble a few weeks ago but is reportedly on the road to recovery. Ended up popping into Native after that, then to what was reportedly the last ever Bottom of the Bottle at Carringtons. Twas a good night. Ended up in Shinaz for a curry.
Oh - just uploaded a bunch of watchcam shots to my flickr space (and I've just gone flickr pro - hark at me!)
This animation:
is created from a book I read since Sunday - Red Dog by Louis de Bernières - the same chap who write Birds without Wings which I loved. Red Dog is a small book that is based on a true story of a dog who roams around Western Australia. Good book - may read it to the kids at some point. Its pages are printed in 2 colours - and have a flicker book style animation at the top right of each page - I used my watcham to capture stills to create a short animation of it.

So apart from being whisked away on the magical mystery tour on Saturday, we've pretty much hibernated. I've been reading loads recently...
It's ages since I've read a chunky graphic novel but I picked up Tricked by Alex Robinson and it was superb. The experience of 'doing' a graphic novel is more like watching a film that reading a book and if this were a film I think it would be a hit. The illustration work in here is so absorbing and the plot, following slices of the lives of 6 individuals initially unrelated, is addictive. I couldn't put it down. More info here and a forum that the author himself seems to frequent..
The other book I've read recently (finished it yesterday) is a new release - The Conjurors Bird by Martin Davies. It's (another) 2 books in one styled book - a chapter to chapter tag team dual story, the first - a chip on his shoulder taxidermist who gets involved with a quest that soon takes over his every waking minute to solve, the second of the famous naturalist Joseph Banks who went with one of the finest Yorkshiremen ever - Captain James Cook on his first major voyage of discovery.
I liked it but found it perhaps a little padded out at times, and the romance angles were perhaps a little too 'chick lit' for my liking, but all in all an enjoyable read and apparently the factual reference (of which there is a fascinating amount) is true.

So yea - we got taken on a magical mystery tour to a place called Hodsock Priory - a place famed for it's snowdrops this time of year. We spent a few hours wandering the woods and gardens then had a (very cold) picnic! I've uploaded a bunch of photos to my flickr space.

Stopped in and watched the tellybox last night. The Winter Olympic opening ceremony in Turin (where the shroud, the fiat and the invention of solid chocolate are from) was superbly done. Top bombing from the pyrotechnics people. Brilliantly designed and co-ordinated fireworks display and lighting of the Olympic flame sequence. Rather gushy commentary though although Graham Bell, Harrogatonian skiing champ looks like he me be a good pundit. Certainly less nauseating than his co presenters were last night. I'm sure they'll come into their own when they've got some sport to natter about. Then I watched a superb proger called 'Folk at The BBC'. Unfortunately folk has a proper beardo wierdigan stigma attached to it, but there was some absolute quality performance on there. A mix of archived, grainy stuff with phrases like "this was originally recorded for the third programme" to a load of stuff recorded especially . Some top insights into the history of melody, how some melodies are known in every culture in the world and have been for a very long time. The example the chappie sited was the twinkle twinkle little star tune, then he sang Ukrainian, Israeli, Japanese (etc) variants. Fascinating it was. One of the things that really stood out for me musically was 'The Incredible String Band'. Indian influenced sitar backed uniqueness. Well, I'm off to get ready for our magical mystery tour now...

Err, thanks to Bretty and McParty who sent me this STATIC image. That's right. It's not animated. That's your head doing that that is.

Going on a magical mistery tour tomorrow - someone (for a treat for Eirene's birthday) has said we're going somwhere, we should wear outdoor stuff and that's it! Should be an adventure.

Its like jet lag for a few days after I have done a FIRE. Crazy weeks work lead into Quite a busy weekend leading up to said event comprised of 2 kids parties and our Associated Dairies (ASDA) big shop shop on Saturday. Sunday lie in, lead to Sunday lunch at a mates house then at 3:30pm hit the office to gather FIRE stuff. 5:30pm unloaded the van into Native. Stonking spectacular event with drumming, major tops quality tunes and playing from all involved, comedy golf sale antics, glitter bombs, Guinness, V&T's & VRB's 4am, closed. 5am breakfast in whistle stop café with the remains of crew, then coffee in Neros. Finished 'work' went home, walked kids to school. Big mistake of the day was sleeping. Normally fine and dandy after 1 nights sleep dep if I keep going steady away but sleeping for a couple of hours then waking up made me feel the worst I have felt in I don't know how long. Felt really bad, hid in the top room where Eirene and Tina were decorating.
Half a central heating system was installed on Thursday, Friday was supposed to be completion day heralding the advent of not just cold but hot running water and some new fangled white painted metal objects bolted to the walls who's propose it is to radiate heat throughout the house. What will the think of next.
Alas the chaps couldn't come Friday leaving us with a house that looked like it was from the film 'Brazil'. Today we've just had a book club meeting which is nice and joy of joy abound, though completion of the new fangled system today, we have hot water (apart from the shower and dishwasher the only hot water in the house has been from the kettle since October ish). What a bath I had. I'd been given some top clobber from Lush. A coffee, cocoa and hemp washy juice and a peppermint face pack thing (Unisex! Honest!). Really nice and well worth the 3 months in the winter wait for. I think.
Anyway.. Back to the jetlag thing. A Barry Whiter (all nighter) without the subsequent Leo Sayer (all dayer) gives you sort of jet lag, now 2:45am and I'm moblogging. May get back into reading 'the conjurors bird' which I got from the dairies on Saturday. I'll let you know what it was like. Maybe in a few hours.

I'm quite excited now. I've just had delivery of a load of stuff for FIRE on Sunday. Look at all the little FIRE lighters / bottle openers, standing there, ready for action (and to be given to people dressed red, while stocks last),
The flyers for the next event after this one (March 5th) are rather handily "DO NOT DISTURB, I've been at FIRE" door hanger thingys. These also just landed and I'm very pleased with them.

Wowzers - I just fixed my watchcam after it had been off the road for about 2 years - stuff still on there (well where else is it going to go?) from caming down the river Wharfe when we still had Humbrum the campervan, and some shots from our trip to Goa, India. Only teeny tiny things:
(actual size)but I love(d) the format and am so glad I've got it working again. watchcam goa - a photoset on Flickr
