Just finished reading "The War of Don Emanuel's Nether Parts" by Louis de Bernières. It's a superb read. It's the third book I've read of his and I loved every moment of it. Amongst the things I love about his master of the art writing style is the way he describes place. The first book I read of his was the epic Birds Without Wings which I was on with for most of last summer, was all set in Turkey. The second book I read of his was "Red Dog", depicted Western Australian place and character in a brilliant fashion. The War of Don Emanuel's Nether Parts is set in South America and unfolds a wonderful story. So many characters are introduced, class systems and cultures explored, and fascinating insights into that part of the world are unveiled. A proper page turner from start to finish.

Top night FIRE was on Sunday. I think we have finally cracked it with the layout for that place. Ram packed, superb music from all the DJ's - I particularly loved playing along to Mike H. Dissident, the new (to FIRE) chap was ace - he did 2 till 4. Much fun and frolic. Went to Moko Lounge after that which had Kiss Da Funk on - great vibe and great tunes they had going. I've got the photos ready to upload - I've had a 'no internet' scenario for 2 days. Just trying to upload a bunch of photos from our weekend away in the Lakes first (to flickr which seems to be down at the moment - will try later I guess). Top time was had up there as well!

Warrington, originally uploaded by DragonDrop.

Staying in Warrington tonight. The last time I experienced music in Warrington (or Warrington in general for that matter) was to come and see Radiohead. Tonight, very randomly I saw a battle of the bands, due to the fact I was having a general explore and heard some music. A 6 piece band called Dropscience were up first, not too bad they were in a ska drawl rock kind of way. Some good off beats, quite tight, entertaining. Left after their set.

Can't quite work out the accent here. It sounds northern, but I'd have expected it to be scouse / welch influenced but not a snif of said dialects from what I heard. Anyway. Sleep-o-clock me thinks.

This is a bit freaky in a 'big brother is watching' kind of way, a chap I'm working with at the moment needed a scan of a bank note for a graphic / design he's doing.. I had my camera with me so I offered to take a snap of the afore mentioned cash. I took 2 photos, and sent them to him (files were called DSC_27.jpg and DSC_28.jpg). When he tried to open them in Photoshop (CS1) the following scary message appeared..

This is the link in the message : www.rulesforuse.org

Begs the question - how does it know? Photoshop must have a hidden catalogue of all major bank notes and it must 'test' every image it opens.. Wouldn't that be slowing down the application? What else is it looking out for? I'm even less keen on Photoshop now. VIVA LA FIREWORKS.

Here is some more thinking on this thread:::

This thing is ace - We Feel Fine / by Jonathan Harris and Sepandar Kamvar never before has blogosphere been directorised like that! I like it.

Much better drive over to Cheshire today. Came the A59 / M56 / M6 way. Sunny morning, only one hold up and that wasn't that bad. (an incident between a ford ka and an articulated lorry. Guess who won)

Clover has gone in for her MOT today. Fingers crossed!

It’s a while since I’ve had to experience the wrath of the M62 on a wet Monday morning rush hour. It’s incredible how busy it gets. Set off about 06:40 I reached the M621 / M62 merge south of Leeds by 07:15 ish and it was bumper to bumper. 8 miles east of the M60 things stopped. Crawled my way round Manchester and arrived at my destination (near Runcorn, Cheshire) at about 09:10. Not much fun. Anyway. Good weekend. Sunday lunch was nice by the way.

Stayed in last night with Sophie. Eirene went out on her first girly night out for months. She had a nice time by all accounts.

Very soon we're off to Native State to try out their Sunday Roast. Something that they are very proud of. Locally sourced meat is the bit that did it for me. Also phrases like "everything fresh, from scratch, nothing plastic" also did it for me. The difference between bulk bought / supermarket meat and friendly local butchers meat is incredible. Last year we had friends round - we had some Lamb from ASDA, they has some from a local butchers - even looking at them side by side (cooked the same way) the difference was amazing - alongside the local butchers meat the ASDA meat was rank. Anyway - all this is slowing me down from getting my grub!

Very tired today. Had a busy day that involved meeting 2 big deadlines and driving to Cheshire for a meeting, getting home (in time to watch half an hour of Big Brother 7 opening on the telly) Before I had to go out and take photos of a friends shop front. I ended up hanging about there to watch his band Kenievel (great stuff they are) rehearse for a bit. By the time I got hime I was not tired, and neither was Sophie. Today, I'm looking forward to the arrival of the new FIRE flyers and posters!

Amongst the many many many things that made me decide as a kid that films just couldn't ever get better than Starwars (now called "Episode IV a new hope"), was the scene when Princess Laya appeared as a hologram from R2D2 and chanted "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, your our only hope..." I thought about how cool a thing like that would be in real life (along with Light Sabers, Wookies, Imperial Star Destroyers and the like) Check this out - they now exist!

Belleville Rendezvous (AKA Triplettes de Belleville)

Watched a fantastic film last night. All the qualities of what I think a good film should be. Great characters, very believable (even though it's a feature length animation). Bruno the dog is fantastic - his facial expressions and body language had us in stitches. There is a waiter who is also absolutely hilarious. Good story - very dark in places which I liked. The film, even though it's French subtitled (which I know some people dislike) it is more of a silent movie in it's portrayal - most of the communication is non vocal.

- Here it is the IMDB blurb, here are some more stills - the illustration is superb. I'd say it's a must watch film.

Flickr has gone GAMMA!

Over the last few months one website has really held my interest in a major way. It's not myspace.com (which is really cool in it's own way). It's not pandora (a recent discovery ranking in amongst the best musical splendidity), it's not even some of the old favorites like b3ta or bbc (especially when the cricket is on) but flickr, the photo environment like non before it. Well - they have just re-designed the interface - same content new buttons and that. It's ace. Flickr: Photos from DragonDrop is my bit of it, but there are millions of intractable photos, and users thousands of groups, forums and ideas. V.Cool, 2.0

I am sick of spam. I've got loads of active email addresses and typically, I get about 500 emails over a weekend that VAST majority of which are spam. I'm loathed to spend time and money reducing it but thats what I'm going to have to do sooner or later. PAH!

Rant over. Had a great weekend. Saturday daytime we all went to a friends birthday party. Kids, pizza, cake and beer.

Yesterday I played my first game of disc golf disc golf this year. Personal best round of 35 (9 hole), putting on form, driving needs some work. Took Felix- he's got a good eye! Went to jam night at the Iron Duke last night, that was fun, ended up in Moko Lounge which was also fun.

Have a look at these sites that I've gotten into this week.. the cool hunter reports on things that are... well... cool. By jimmeny - it does what it says on the tin. Some very cool articles.

Secondly - I've gotten really into pandora (www.pandora.com). Basically, you design your own radio station. The more info you give it, the better it gets - you tell it some things like artists / bands or tracks that you like and it will play tracks that are have similar musical qualities. You can then fine tune it by telling it things like "I don't like this track, this is not the sort of thing that this station should be playing" and it adjusts it's output accordingly. It's superb.

Other than that, it's been work catch up mode, and I've started painting the back fence today.

happy privet, originally uploaded by DragonDrop.

Went to take photo's at an old folks home today which happens to be near Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve. Eirene's nana (sophies great grandmother!) is over from Ireland at the mo so we went there for a walk around. Really nice place. Loads of wildlife.

After that we went for lunch at the Tiger Inn at Coneythorpe where this happy privet resides. The Tiger Inn is everything a country pub should be, ye old, nestled against a picture postcard perfect village green, great food, great ale, ver ver nice.

ja colour, originally uploaded by DragonDrop.

Nature seems to turn the colour volumes to MAX this time of year. Saw this outburst of colour yesterday lunch time as I took a break from where I was working near Castleford. Isn't it a bit early for poppies though?

Had a busy week. Monday was breaking down FIRE (what a belter that night was - the new stage layout was great fun.. will be getting the video these chaps shot back next week for the interest of those who've been asking) Tuesday, took the day off and hung out with the family - went bowling to Megabowl at Clifton Moor. Wednesday, interface design type work for a software company in Harrogate, fun / challenging work. Thursday and Friday I was taking photo's for a training manual at an old folks home. Went to the Plush 1st B'day party Thursday night at Revolution. Nice doo. Nibbles and champers, chocolate fountains. Sol beer was being promoted and was being all nice and free but decided I didn't like it much. Sol 0. Corona 1.

Back yard still looks like a building site mind but last night we fired up the new brick BBQ. Top scran are us. Veg'd skewers, mackerel and sausages, proper warm sunny late afternoon, cold 1664's and a brand new set of shiny barbecue tongs and flipper. How happy was I. Did get some Angus burgers and steaks as well but we were too pogged to stick em on. May eat them in a bit.

Today, got sorted out a bit then went to get Clover back from winter storage. The Summer has landed.
