Disc Golf in the Valley Gardens

What are those new baskets in the valley gardens in Harrogate?

They are targets for a game called Disc Golf – that’s what.
I was lucky enough to try out the course last weekend with the course designer – Conor Davies. Although the course is not officially open yet, we observed quite a bit of interest from people out for a Sunday walk. “I think it’s some kind of bird feeder” and “what have the council been wasting the bloody money on now” we’re amongst the comments overheard from interested observers of the new furniture.

If you, like most people have not encountered disc golf before, it’s a game that roughly uses the rules of golf, but instead of whacking a ball about you throw these disc instead and play your next shot from where it lies. Instead of heading for a hole on a green, you aim for one of these baskets. The object is to get round the course in as few throws as possible.

(screen shot of my google map of the course)

The new disc golf (often referred to as “frisby golf”) course is set to open in April 2010 and you’ll be able to hire discs and get access to the course for £2.10 for an adult. There are two types of disk, left handed and right handed.. only joking, there are two main types of disc; drivers – you can get these further but they tend to fade/draw and the more accurate “approach and putt” discs – more accurate without the range.

This 9 hole course, situated around the top of the current pitch and putt course (sharing the same club house to hire the equipment from) itself is quite small by some standards – that but that’s not to say it’s lacking anything that some of the international courses offer. There’s some exceptional ‘through the trees’ action with some holes favouring the left hander, some the right. It’s in a beautiful part of the gardens – a part that is so often just walked through, an arboretum in it’s own right with some lovely little nooks and crannies.

If you’ve not played before, I’d say it’s a great activity to try out – suitable for nearly all ages (if you can throw a frisby, you can play disc golf).

Site / Server status:recovery mode

(Arrgh factor 10) So I’ve had a major problem with DragonDrop.org. One of those compounded problems that cost time effort and money to fix. One of those problems that seemed to be two steps forward, one step back. I’m on the right road to fixing it though. Apart from billing problems whereby the company I thought was holding it wasn’t – meaning I had an email out of the blue saying “Excuse me, you owe me 4 years hosting”. Another problem whereby the server it was on (called Palmer) died, taking with it a big bunch of the DragonDrop files with it. On top of all that, Blogger who I’ve been friends with for years and years, now owned by google has announced that they are no longer supporting FTP publishing so I’ve got to re think the way it all works..
Every cloud has a silver lining. . .
This all ties in with a thought that I’d wanted to rip it to bits and put it back together again – which is what I’m doing.

I’m getting a fresh batch of T-Shirts printed, ready for you lot and I to take on adventures. I’m hoping to look at DragonDrop and work out what it is and what I want to do with it. It’s got something to do with Adventure but I’m not quite sure what yet. One thing I do know is that it may be down, but it’s not out. Thanks for your patience!

BBC Old School

A few nights ago, a few of us were in my local, discussing Tomorrow’s Word of all things. This science and tech program I’m sure had a massive influence on myself and a lot of my peers. We decided that it should be brought back as a./ it’s extremely relevant to today’s society and b./ it was brilliant. I made a note to email the BBC and ask them. Whilst hunting for info, I came across the BBC Archive website. What a gold mine of retro goodness it is.

With a mainly news and factual content, such as News: “on the eve of the Apollo 11 launch“. It’s incredible to listen in the this past time and imagine how hooked and immersed on the project the entire planet must have been.
Back to Tomorrow’s World – they have a great back catalogue of episodes of this classic TV. Looking at this show from 1979 on “The Mobile Phone”, It’s quite incredible to see how amazed the presenter was at introducing the concept. Would any of them of really believed if we told them how much this come on. Fascinating. Worth a look.

Six words

This idea of ‘six words’ rocks.
Write a six word essay everyday.
Six is the minimum, more acceptable.
As its new I’ll do several.
Tomorrow I may just do one.

Spring

We’re into spring now. No more driving home in the dark. I can now relax the strict ‘shut the door’ policy of our front room. Going out without your coat weather is just around the corner.
We have had a ‘proper’ winter this year. Snow, lots of snow at Christmas time. It has been a lovely winter. I normally don’t care much for the colder, darker end of the seasons but I’ve actually quite liked it this year.
Another year goes by and I think “I’m getting more and more in touch with the changing of the seasons”. I’m noticing things flowering, waddling and budding at this time of year more. Looking back through prior years, its quite incredible to see the difference the next 30 days can make.Right now, just into March, we’ve still got the odd stubborn patch of snow visible on high ground yet within 30 days we could have T-Shirt weather. DragonDrop T-Shirt weather at that.
