I was having a bit of a special dada and daughter moment with Annie. Just her and I were snuggled up on my bed. I had a camera within reach, so I grabbed in and took a few close up snaps – nothing special or new. I noticed how fascinated in the object Annie (age 7 months) was. She was utterly and totally transfixed on the camera. I had an idea to set it on interval mode and just give it to her to look at. It’s a sturdy wee beast – a Pentax Optio WG-II which claims to be Adventure Proof, Water Proof , Sand Proof and Shock Proof. It doesn’t mention if it’s Dribble Proof or not but I took the risk. She’s very much into the tactile sense at the moment. Everything has to be grabbed and touched.
I stuck it on a no flash, fairly general mode that in this fairly dim light would require a tripod or at the least a steady hand. Something that a 7 month old baby does not have. She is constantly busy. Fascinated with the nibbly nubbly form of the black object, interest levels piqued every 10 seconds when the little green light then the bright orange focus assist light came on, followed by a faint click. She turned it over and over. Shook it about and bit it. Prodded and plucked it with her dinky little digits. She loved it.
These shots – the very first photos that Annie has ever taken – are the ‘best’ shots from a total of 66 photos she took (A lot were just black). 66 photos or precisely 11 minutes. Good work Annie! Is it too early for me to say that she may share an interest in experimental photography?
