Today we boarded a northern rail train and headed out to visit the National Railway Museum in York. I used our friends ‘friends and family’ railcard so the return fare to York was only £10.05. The museum is adjacent to the station so getting the train was a fun, economical and easy option. The museum is free and massive with several buildings containing trains, the train works(where you can see the trains being restored before their final resting place in the museum) the coach house which has royal carriages dating back over a hundred years and many more train related things. We peeked in train windows and marveled at bath tubs and beds and deeply quilted seats. Unexpectedly we stumbled upon the science centre, where a demonstration of Newtons third law of physics was taking place. We saw elephants with different masses catapulted into the air and the children were asked to send worm balloons flying around the room. The best bit was definately Barbie being fired out of a cannon. All for science.
I absolutely recommend the National Train Museum as a great day out with the children. We only saw half so there is scope for a return visit in the not to distant future.’Friends and family’, railcards pay for themselves very quickly if you intend to use the trains a few times in the year and can be loaned to friends. Perhaps
a couple of families could share the price and pass it between themselves.Food and extra activities at the museum are expensive so be sure to pack a picnic and snacks and plenty of water to stave of little people grumbles.
