I’ve been invited to talk at ‘UX Conversion Camp‘ next Thursday. I attended last year, it was ace. A mix of UX, Business, Psychology, Usability, Accessibility, Ethnographics and cats. Weirdly, I didn’t blog about it (rare). I think I was going through an off the grid phase. Anyway – this year I’m there. Talking. My talk’s about stuff I’ve learned and stuff we’ve done at Asda and George.com and the mother ship WalmartLabs, San Fran California over the last 18 months.. as well as lots of a tech / eCommerce nerdiness. Tips, tricks, do’s and dont’s.
I’ve spent most of the past week getting a presentation sorted. I’ve been pestering oh so many people at work for intel. There are some fascinating people who’ve lead some amazing initiatives there. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve said ‘Ooh, can I pick your brains about something’ this last couple of weeks. Hopefully paid off though.
Positioning wise, I’m going in representing the newly formed ‘Walmart International’. A month or so ago, I’d have bylined myself with @WalmartLabs. Walmart has recently gone through a big change. They’ve / We’ve carved off a huge chunk of it and called it Walmart Technology which is the umbrella for all tech. Which is Huge. If you consider, according the the FORTUNE 500, It’s at the very the top of the tree. Something like 1.4 million employees. THere’s a whole lot of tech in there. In Leeds – the bit that I’m involved with – there’s now an ‘Asda Technology’. @WalmartLabs who I first signed up for, it seems is no longer a trading entity. Global eCommerce (GEC – former parent to @WalmartLabs) seems to have turned into Walmart International eCommerce which I think means all the bits that Walmart has technological control over – except the USA. Anyway – it’s all fine.
So, the talk I’m doing is mostly about Asda with bits of George.com. There’s a smattering of West Coast Walmart thrown in for good measure. I’ll be talking for 30 minutes.
I’ve then got to (2 days later) fly out to San Francisco partially to do a kind of abridged version of the talk I’m doing in Manchester next week. Rock ampersand Roll.
It’s free in (‘Brands only) – with a free lunch. (rumour is, it’s something nice-o-rama). It’s all for a good cause as well – RSPCA are the benefactors. This makes me happy. If you go, say hello!
